I’ve been blogging for just over a year now. I probably don’t blog as much as I should to get the most business benefit from it but I really do get a lot of personal benefit out of it just the same. Lately, I have been reading back through last year’s posts to see if I have developed a trend in my writing to follow and I discovered that I do. What always seems to be the theme, if nothing more than an underlying theme, is the importance and knowing and trusting who you work with.

So, the other day I was watching a little TV and that USPS ad comes on about the flat rate shipping. I must have seen this commercial about 100 times before but for some reason it sort of hit me differently this time. It made me start to think about my customers. Like the businessmen in these commercials, my customers know their business inside and out and they usually are the best at what they do. And, like the guys in the ads, they have little interest in anything else. When they look at what someone else does for them to help their business grow, at first they think it sounds complicated.

I have been fortunate to work a lot with very brilliant people that have developed cutting edge products. When they call me they are usually trying to figure out how to sell them. Advertising and marketing, though pretty straightforward to me, seems very complicated to them. “Why don’t they just call me and place an order?” they ask knowing before the words even leave their lips that it just doesn’t happen that way. I’ve learned that they don’t have to know how or why it works and they don’t want to know either. Rather than wasting their time trying to teach them my business, I just work on building their trust and confidence in my ability to do what I do best.

I experience the same thing in my business. Recently my marketing team developed an internet marketing tool so we can deliver our sales incentives and travel certificates electronically online. With so much business now being done over the internet, it became apparent that I needed to be able to participate in that process in order to continue assisting in our customers’ success. Still, when the idea was first brought to me I remember thinking, “Internet? The internet is complicated!” so I know exactly how my customers are thinking. I don’t know much about building web sites and I’m really not interested in learning any more than I have to about it. I just want to have all the tools necessary to help my clients be successful, and I’ve come to realize I don’t need to waste my time trying to figure out all the details of how they work.
